ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg

Welcome to Africa!

The first night we will sleep over in Johannesburg to have time to rest and prepare our journey to Mozambique. You will be picked up from the Oliver Tambo Airport and taken to your accommodation, a guest house or a hostel. Tonight you will you meet your guide Farayi for full pre-trip briefing. For this reason, please book a flight that arrives preferably in the afternoon that you have enough time to settle in before the briefing. After the briefing we will enjoy dinner together.

Day 2: Road trip through South Africa

After an early and light breakfast we leave the metropolis behind us and head towards Mozambique. During our journey you may enjoy the passing landscapes of South Africa. We will stop for lunch and to stretch our legs.

After passing the border formalities we are almost in the capital Maputo. We will arrive into our accommodation that will be a hostel. You will be staying in shared rooms or alternatively in private rooms. After settling in we will have dinner together and you will meet your local dance teacher David who will introduce himself and the coming program.

Day 3: Exploring Maputo and relaxing

Today you may sleep in after the travelling days.  In the afternoon we will have a tour around Maputo to get to know the surroundings, have some drinks and enjoy the city vibe. You will also have an opportunity to buy some local crafts. In the evening we will enjoy dinner together.

Day 4: Time to dance!

It’s dancing time! During the week you will have 4 sessions, each lasting 3 hours. The classes are held in afternoons from 16.00 to 19.00. Each class will have live music and you will have an opportunity to try out drumming as well. David will also give you information about the dances giving you the opportunity to learn about the culture. The dancing hall is on walking distance and we will walk there together.

In the morning you will have time to use internet or enjoy a longer breakfast. Before lunch we will visit Nuclear de Arte to see the local artist working, and will have lunch together in town.

Day 5: More art and dancing

After breakfast we head to French Art Center that was created to promote art in Mozambique. The center offers nice atmosphere, art exhibitions, and music performances. After the center we will visit local deaf school where we have the opportunity to get to know the school a bit more, and to dance and play with the children. In the evening you will have your dancing class at 16.00. After the class we will enjoy dinner together.

Day 6: Picnic in Katembe

Today we wake up early to jump to Katembe Island located in front of Maputo city. We will travel to Katembe by public ferry. After exploring Katembe we will have a light picnic on the beach before heading back to Maputo. In the evening it’s time to continue dancing at 16.00. After the dancing class we will have dinner together.

Day 7: Origins of timbila

Today we will not have a dancing class. Instead you will learn about the making of timbila, a traditional Mozambican percussion instrument. With David we will visit the elders that are making the instruments in Maputo.

As it is Friday night we will explore some Maputo pubs after dinner starting from the Gill Vincento Pub or another place. Those who wish to sleep or relax after dinner a transport back to hostel will be organized.

Day 8: Feel the rhythm on the beach

It is time to feel the rhythm on the beach! Today we will get up early and head to Macaneta beach about 30 kilometers north from Maputo. After arrival you will have your last dancing session – on the beach. After the class you will have time to relax and enjoy the beach vibe as we will overnight in Macaneta. This night we will enjoy a Mozambican style barbecue prepared by Farayi.

Day 9: Feel the bright Southern sun

Today we start our day with a lovely brunch that Farayi prepares for the whole group. After you will have free time to enjoy the sun, walk on the beach, read a book or whatever you feel like doing. In the afternoon we will travel back to Maputo. To celebrate our last evening in Maputo and Mozambique we will have dinner in the traditional Costa del Sol Restaurant.

Day 10: Farewell to Africa!

Last day of the tour will start very early as we drive back to South Africa. Please note that border formalities may take time. We will arrive in Johannesburg in the late afternoon to evening. Then it's time to give hugs for farewell! We will drop those travelers who have booked evening flights out to the airport. Those who have opted to stay in South Africa can be dropped at the airport or in Pretoria Hatfield.
