Day before the trip starts
It is advisable to arrive to Dar es Salaam a day before the safari starts. We may recommend you to stay in the Friendly Gecko Guesthouse where your guide Farayi will meet you for a pre-trip briefing in the evening. The idea of the pre-trip briefing is to get to know each other, go through the coming program and agree on details for the departure next morning.
Please note that this day is not calculated as part of the safari but we are happy to help and advice on e.g. how to get to Guesthouse etc.
Day 1: Towards Mikumi National Park
Let the nature adventure begin! On the very early hours we brace ourselves for getting out of Dar. Our first day is a full driving day, which gives us also a good opportunity to see how the city turns into a country side and fields and trees replace the traffic and noise.
On our way we’ll enjoy packed breakfast and stop for lunch in Morogoro. If we are lucky, we’ll be seeing already some animals when approaching the gates of Mikumi National Park. We’ll do our first game drive while reaching our accommodation inside the park.
After settling in we’ll enjoy dinner in the restaurant close to our rooms.
Meals: breakfast at guesthouse, lunch and dinner in restaurant
Day 2 & 3: Two full-days in the bush
After early breakfast we drive around the national park to explore the animals and enjoy the nature. We keep the day flexible and Farayi can concentrate on the areas of your interest, whether it is the mammals, birds or insects.
About at lunch time we return to campsite where lunch is prepared together. After enjoying a nice camp meal and a small rest, we’ll start our second round in the park. In the evening it’s time to reflect the day, tell stories, and enjoy dinner by camp’s restaurant or by the campfire.
Meals: breakfast included to accommodation, lunch prepared by Farayi, dinner in restaurant
Day 4: Bye, bye giraffes and towards Udzungwa Mountains
Today we’ll say good bye to Mikumi National Park and do our final game drive exiting the park and heading towards Udzungwa Mountains and Rainforest. On our way we’ll pick up some lunch in Mikumi Town.
We’ll be arriving to our destination, to Hondo Hondo Forest Camp, in the late afternoon. After settling in you’ll have free time to look around or just to relax. We’ll enjoy dinner in the restaurant.
Meals: Breakfast included to accommodation, lunch in restaurant, dinner in Hondo Hondo (full-board)
Day 5: Hiking in Udzungwa Mountains National Park
Udzungwa Mountains National Park has the second largest biodiversity in Africa. This is a perfect place to hike and explore birds and different flora. You’ll be seeing baboons, and most likely also mangabey monkeys. The park has also a very rare species called the Udzungwa red colobus monkey as well as black and white colobus monkeys.
The National Park has many hiking paths to choose from, among them a good day-hike to to Sanje Waterfalls. We’ll start our hike soon after breakfast and return to camp in late afternoon. Packed lunch is enjoyed in the park. After resting and free time we’ll enjoy dinner in the restaurant.
Meals are covered by the camp restaurant in Hondo Hondo (full-board).
Day 6: Driving back to Dar
When the rooster sings, is our time to start driving back to Dar es Salaam. We will stop for breakfast and lunch on our way, and arrival in Dar es Salaam will happen in the evening (depending on traffic etc.)
In Dar es Salaam we will drop you to your accommodation and then it’s time for goodbyes.
Meals: breakfast from Hondo Hondo, lunch in restaurant
