Our full-day or two-day hike will take you to varying terrain and landscapes of Västerö Island in Kvarken Archipelago. The nature paths run through beautiful conservation area on the island's west coast offering you an unique opportunity to camp by the sea.
Experiencing silence and the sense of wilderness in a beautiful conservation area
Combining hiking in the forest and the archipelago-experience by the sea
Possibility to camp by the sea
Quite steep ups and downs, deciduous forest turning into dominantly pine forest, flat paths going along the coast line, reddish pebbles and the real sense of wilderness − all these attributes describe well the varying nature in Västerö.
Västerö is situated about 50 kilometers North from the city of Vaasa. The Gråberget area is among the highest places in otherwise very flat Ostrobothnia. Jättkastet is Västerö’s highest peak reaching to 29,4 metres above the sea level. There are alternative routes giving opportunities to choose between easy and a bit more challenging hiking routes.
The possibility to camp right by the sea is special in Västerö. As the landscapes open towards the west, there are perfect locations for admiring the sun sets and the night-less nights of Finnish summer − as well as the view to World Heritage Site and to Mikkelinsaaret where one may also take a day trip by boat.
Västerö offers also plenty of historical sites and stories along the nature paths. If we continue up until Lillsandviken in the Northern end of the nature route, we may see the cliff of Ryssberget named after a Russian ship that crushed against the rocks in an autumn storm in 1714.
In Söderskatan visitors may sleep over in an old fisherman’s cottage or sauna that was once used as a fishing base. There’s also an old landing spot where guns and solders trained in Germany were smuggled in by the Finnish independence movement during the first World War in 1917.
What we particularly like is that the nature paths in Västerö are quiet. There’s space to be and enjoy the nature without crowds, as other hikers are a relatively rare sight.
We are providing tents and other camping facilities − for the 2-day hike you would only need to bring your own sleeping bag and a small pillow on top of your personal gear. We are also happy to assist you with transport when necessary. Please, do not hesitate to contact us for any questions or further information.
