Gusty breeze, the definite sign of a seashore, welcomes us to the fishing harbour in Björkö island. We are in the very West of Finland, in the heart of country’s only nature destination listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
This half-day hike will take us from Björköby fishing harbour to Finnhamn, which is the name of a narrow bay in the end of the cape. The hiking trail is in total 5 km long going through varying terrain from the boreal forest to the rocky shoreline including also historical sites e.g. "russian stoves", cooking stoves made of natural rocks by the Russian navy in the 18th century.
These rocky shores and forests have a lot to offer, and these particular parts are normally quiet. Hence the one who walks along the paths can truly stop to listen to the nature, and to spend a moment alone looking at the sea feeling something from past, when Björkö Island was much more isolated and not connected to the continent by a bridge.
At the end of the trail we will enjoy snacks with coffee and tea by a rustic fishing cottage to warm up during the cold season, or by the beach under the sun, and enjoy the beautiful view before turning back towards the fishing harbor. During summer, you have also an opportunity to test the sea temperature by taking a dip.
The snowfall varies from winter to winter and month to month changing the landscape. Even without snow, the frozen sea offers quite a unique view and reminds us of the power of nature.
On our way back to town we are going to stop by Svedjehamn to climb up to the sightseeing tower to admire the view and explore the land-lifting phenom and De Geer moraines formed during the ice age. Here you will hear a bit more about why the Kvarken Archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We are happy to assist you with transport when necessary. By request this hike can be organized as an overnight two-day version during the summer giving us the opportunity to for example fish and admire the sunset. Please, do not hesitate to contact us for any questions or further information.
